Those are beautiful. How long does it typically take to do a sketch vs. the digital painting step?

It varies a lot. I usually like to spend 2-5 hours on a sketch or drawing, and 3 times as long on a painting if it's large. The little iPhone one was coloured in maybe an hour.
I've wondered the same in my case, too. I think that often, sketches can be a lot more expressive than the finished painting - we allow the lines to be looser, less constrained by color and shadows.
