Sketches Better Than Paintings

Sometimes I wonder if the sketches look better than the paintings.

Trilobite Boy with Gargoyles - sketch.

Trilobite Boy with Gargoyles - complete.

There's something about the scratchiness of it I don't usually retain in the finished pieces. That's why I think I'm enjoying drawing and then placing the original drawing over the digital painting on a multiply layer. I'm catching the scratchiness a bit better.

Avimimus - pencil drawing.

Avimimus - painted using the Sketch Club app on my iPhone.

Those are beautiful. How long does it typically take to do a sketch vs. the digital painting step?

Thanks Jenna!

It varies a lot. I usually like to spend 2-5 hours on a sketch or drawing, and 3 times as long on a painting if it's large. The little iPhone one was coloured in maybe an hour.

I've wondered the same in my case, too. I think that often, sketches can be a lot more expressive than the finished painting - we allow the lines to be looser, less constrained by color and shadows.

I love the feather texture on your Avimimus's crest!

Thanks Emily!

As a friend noted on Facebook, we're looser with lines and then try to paint within them.

And thanks about the crest! I'll happily take praise from an artist of your caliber any time.

Posts over 14 days old have their comments held in moderation - I've been getting an unusual amount of spam for a guy who paints trilobites. I'll release it lickety-split though.
