Mythical Flying Trilobite Fossil III

The new blog banner is now installed above.
Mythical Flying Trilobite Fossil III
Oil on shale, pencil on bristol and a surprising amount of digital done in Photoshop with my new tablet. Copyright to moi, 2009.

For Art Monday, I'll try to show some of the details, and maybe just how much digital there is overlaying the oil on shale. I added quite a bit of colour to this little beastie.

Insect wings instead of mammal! Do I need a new tattoo?

you should think about merchandising temporary tattoos too ;)

I'll put out a pop album of happy goth tunes to go with the temporary tattoos. And a Happy Meal toy. Thanks Traumador. I'm on my way to pop-mega-stardom. ;-)

Superb! That's a wicked Trilobite and I love the texture on the rock too.

And is that a bouquet of crinoids sprouting up on the right side?

Hey, thanks Lim!

Yes it is! "Bouquet" of crinoids -- I like that.

This looks great! I live all the detail in the wings and cruziana!

Love the font you used for your blog title too! Is that a font, or did you create it yourself?

Glendon Mellow said...

Why thank you, Mr. Bond!

The font is Calligraph 421, and I played with the individual letter sizes. The capital "T" and "F" were actually on a separate layer so I could move them lower than the rest of the letters. I used my tablet in pencil mode to mimic careless drafting lines around them.

Love it, especially the crinoids and the iridescence of the wings!

That looks great! I'm always impressed with your work(fun?). The blog seems brighter, was it on a darker background before or is that because I came from my dark blog?

Glendon Mellow said...

Thanks Karen! I think the crinoids add a little something. Ahhh, pink and blue iridescence...

Thanks Eric! The whole blog switched from dark greys, grey-blues, blacks and greens in January. I wanted to increase my readability. I have no problem with pale text on a black background, but some people have trouble.

The banner is a lot paler too, to stretch me a little, and to match the paler look of the blog.

Fantastic new banner, I love it. As always, I admire your creative vision.

Thanks Tim! I'm pretty pleased with it. I wonder if my prediction from yesterday that I'll always work in oils with some digital is true. I guess we'll know in a couple of years!
